The Senior Project is an independent project that students begin at the end of their Junior year, and complete in their Senior year at Helix Charter High School. The project has three components.
The first is the 20-hour independent project. The student chooses an area of interest, and drafts a proposal at the end of Junior year. Once the proposal is approved, the student then independently completes the project some time between the summer before Senior year and March of Senior year. During the project, the student creates a portfolio, and in April, the student will go before a panel of judges, made up of teachers and community members, who will review the portfolio and interview the student on his/her project. This phase of the project completion is called Senior Defense.
The second component of the project is the Senior Research Paper, which is completed in the student's English class. The paper must be 6-8 pages long, use a minimum of 8 sources, and is on a topic related to a culminating experience at Helix Charter High School. The student must earn a minimum score of 70 to pass the paper.
The third component of the project is the Boards Presentation, which will be completed in May. The student will create a speech that describes the process of the project, the link between the project and the paper, the significant learning that occurred during the project, and the student's future goals. The speech must be between 8-10 minutes long. Students will have an opportunity to practice their speeches in advisory, and then present to a panel of judges consisting of teachers and community members. The student must pass the speech with a 70 or higher.
Senior Project Announcements
Seniors- NEW dates
The season of "Senior Project" is upon us! Read below for important dates pertaining to your project.
1- the deadline to ask for an extension (due to a pre-arranged date NOT because of procrastination) was December 19, 2010. If you missed this deadline and require an extension, please see Mrs. Passmore in room 140A before the end of this week (by January 14).
2- the deadline to REVISE your senior project proposal is Friday, February 25. If you need to revise your proposal (make substantial changes or change your project entirely), you must do two things: 1- revise your proposal and highlight the changes, and 2- fill out a project revision form (can be found under the proposal folder on the senior project website). The revisions need to be turned into Mrs. Passmore in 140A. If you are unsure if the changes to your project merit a revision, email Mrs. Passmore or come see her in 140A. After February 25, all project proposals on file are the ones students will be accountable for completing. NO CHANGES AFTER FEBRUARY 25 will be allowed.
3- Senior Project Portfolios will be due on March 30. This is the FIRST Wednesday back from Spring Break. Portfolios will not be accepted late. Directions for completing your portfolio are on the Senior Project Website, under the "Portfolio Materials" folder. REMEMBER to be completing your Progress Reports along the way- they are an essential part of your portfolio.
4- Ms. Kahler and Mrs. Passmore will offer several workshops on how to complete your portfolio- dates are coming soon. In the meantime, look through the website and begin completing your portfolio and writing the necessary documents. Binders are FOR SALE in Mrs. Passmore's office- $7 for a complete binder with dividers and page protectors, or $1 for just the binder (no other materials).
